This past weekend marked the 29th anniversary of the appropriately named “Death Ride”. Being Californians we will ignore the additional tag-line “Tour of the California Alps” because the Alps are not in California they are in Europe; riders are actually touring the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains… anyways.
Riders kicked off as early as 3am to tackle the 5 (that’s right 5) Sierra passes including:
When the riders were not climbing they were descending what is truly an epic course with no real “flat riding”. The scenery was stunning this year with only a late afternoon thunderstorm on Carson Pass spoiling the perfect weather. Not for the faint of heart this ride sells out in hours every year.
Ride organizers report that 15 tandems registered but as of posting they did not have final numbers on how many actually completed the route. We encountered 4 tandems mixed in with the 4000 other riders so expect the final tally to come in close to the prior year numbers of 9.
